One fact about life we can all agree upon is that it can be challenging. For some people, challenges can become opportunities to find the silver linings. Cristina Curp has done just that. As someone who has lived life with a chronic skin condition, and learned to manage it naturally, Cristina is determined to help others do the same.
Cristina is a first-generation American. Following the struggles of her parents and grandparents, who had to leave everything behind in Cuba for a better future for themselves and their children, she is deeply grateful for the opportunities life has offered her. But everyone has to fight their battles. And even though she didn’t have to take a courageous stand against a dictator like her grandfather did, Cristina did not have it easy.
Cristina was only 13 years old when her Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) took hold. After living with a painful and chronic skin condition for many years, Cristina was able to put it in remission at 32. Due to the nature of the condition and the inadequate information available regarding it, it took her a long time to understand what was happening with her body and how to support herself.
Once Cristina made the connection between what she ate and her symptoms, she went down that rabbit hole and never came back up. It took patience, courage, and a lot of self-love to win against HS. Now Cristina helps others do the same by creating resources and educational content.
To educate people on the connection between food and health, especially regarding autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions, Cristina started The Castaway Kitchen–an online community dedicated to recipes and resources to help people deal with chronic illness and diet. She also has a YouTube channel and social media feed documenting her journey and sharing informative content on topics that support her audience in approaching life with more love and vigor as they deal with chronic illness.
As an HS warrior and a functional nutrition therapy practitioner, Cristina is determined to raise awareness regarding this painful skin condition that is often kept secret due to the stigma it carries. While she has had to learn important lessons on her own, she wants to be there for others in need – she wants all other HS warriors to know that they are not alone, it’s not their fault, and it is okay to be the way they are.
Cristina has had a long relationship with obstacles as a military spouse and mother, a plus-size Latina in the online wellness arena, and a hard-working, ambitious woman. Still, her resilient mindset and commitment to enjoying life has never let her troubles phase her. Instead, she chose to learn how to deal with them and heal with them. The resulting success has motivated her to use her life lessons and experiences to help others find their spark and thrive in life, no matter their health issues.
A successful author of two best selling cookbooks and renowned chef, Cristina Curp, shares recipes and information for people who suffer from Hidradenitis suppurativa and other chronic illnesses. She is a magician in the kitchen who believes it is essential to understand food’s impact on your health. Cristina wants people to look at food not only as a means to stay alive but also as a vehicle towards a better life.
