Additionally, Gates and his wife Melinda, along with U2’s lead vocalist, Bono, were named the 2005 Persons of the Year by the magazine. Gates holds several honorary doctorates from universities worldwide. He received knighthood as an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.

In 2006, the Mexican government awarded Gates and his wife the Order of the Aztec Eagle for their global philanthropic work in healthcare and education. In 2016, the couple was again recognized for their humanitarian efforts when they were named recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
