People with ASD often have problems with social communication and overall interaction. They have restrictive or repetitive behaviors or interests and require different methods of moving, learning, or paying attention.
Children or young adults on the autism spectrum often need a specialist to assist them in learning and adapting to the world. Kim Hoehne is a child development specialist and licensed behavior analyst. She is also the CEO of KGH Autism Services and an expert in her field who is passionate about working with children who have special needs.
From a young age, Kim had an innate desire to help people; she says, “I want to wear Mickey Mouse t-shirts and help kids.” Perhaps it was that idea that took root in her mind and prompted her to work with a child with autism. She was studying psychology in college when she met Johnny and was extremely surprised when he handed her his teddy bear. Johnny’s father gave her the job almost immediately, saying that he never gave his toy to just anyone, and Kim was the first person to whom he voluntarily offered the toy. Though she didn’t realize it then, Kim truly had a presence about her that put children like Johnny at ease and made them trust her.
Though slightly apprehensive initially, Kim decided to give it her all and put her heart and soul into helping this little boy who had chosen her. Some difficult times required her full mental and physical strength, which was truly taxing. Yet the milestones she achieved with Johnny were almost magical, like when he said his first words or waited for the bus to take him to his first day of regular kindergarten.
Johnny would be the first of many children Kim would aid in the coming years. Once she completed the required degree, she began to work full-time with children with autism. She also began to train other people to become autism therapists. They would later become a part of her team when she established KGH Autism Services.
With a team of over 150 professionals, the goal of KGH Autism Services is to provide assistance to children with autism and guide the family to better understand it as well. The clinic is a state-of-the-art center that offers a range of services that are designed to meet the needs of every client. In the event that any service already being provided by the clinic is not applicable, then a personal service is created to meet the child’s needs. Some of the services provided at KGH include ABA Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Services, and the development of social skills. Every individual working at KGH undergoes training and workshops allowing them to develop the highest level of understanding and care for the clients. Kim has made sure that everyone is mindful of the best interests of the children as well as the families.
Kim has dedicated her life to helping children with special needs reach their maximum potential and achieve milestones no one thought they were capable of. She also believes in helping families understand and accept their children. She does this by including them as a part of their everyday lessons at the clinic to bring them closer and share in even the smallest of achievements. Compassion and understanding are key to helping autistic children, and Kim feels it is an honor to be of service to them and their families as they grow and prepare for the journey ahead.
