Exploring Himself Through his Craft, This is How The Voice-Alum Kique Gomez Sees Music

Music has been a medium for self-exploration and discovery for eons. It blurs the boundaries and demarcations to curate an equal space for unity. From the early Greek times to our pop culture-addled lives, music takes the center stage in more ways than one. It makes sense that outcasts, underdogs, and underrepresented factions of society take to the art form to chart territories that they are denied otherwise. The Voice alum and musician, Roberto ‘Kique’ Gomez, is one such artist.

Born to a Cuban family in Miami, Florida, Kique grew up grappling with his identity. The US is a hot pot of mixed races and ethnicities, and it can sometimes be too much for a young child to make sense of. Kique recalls his childhood with a bittersweet taste. Whereas on the one hand, he grew up in a normal Hispanic household with a functional dynamic, and on other he always felt a bit detached from his culture. These were feelings that he managed to regulate from time to time, but they did have an impact on him.

This was when he turned to music. In music, Kique found an expressive force that was missing everywhere else. His vocal style bears testament to his identity dilemma. There is a baritone part of his voice that is more in line with the Florida-style music he grew up listening to, and the slight tenor-like features that often blend with his yodle are reminiscent of his Cuban roots.

Recently, Kique appeared on The Voice as part of Gwen Stefanis’ team. After back-to-back stellar performances, not only did Kique manage to sweep the audience off their feet time and again, but also he grew closer to his coach and team members. Sadly, right before his Top 10 performance, he tested positive for COVID and had to perform from his room. The performance was nothing less than iconic and his vocals, despite the progressing ailment, delivered to the best of their ability. However, Kique found himself in the bottom three and lost to a fellow contestant.

But that was not the end for Kique. Since he departed from The Voice, he has been working on creating his music and recently performed at Severna Park with his best friend from the show, Parijita Bastola. He hopes to continue inspiring his fans and listeners to come to terms with their identity through music and art.
